Brandenburg has been particularly badly affected by droughts and dry soils in recent years. To enable better water management, a new measuring network has been developed to monitor soil moisture and drought. It is based on innovative cosmic-ray neutron technology and is the first of its kind in Germany. The project is being implemented jointly by research institutions and state authorities.
Eight measuring stations have been installed in Brandenburg by mid-2024, with four more planned for 2025. The data collected will be publicly accessible in order to support research and practice from the outset (data access).
The 2024 project was partially funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Climate Protection of the State of Brandenburg (MLUK) and was associated with the Climate Change Center Berlin Brandenburg (CCC).
