4th meeting of our Expert Council

Brandenburg climate plan and heat transition with geothermal energy in the metropolitan region

The 4th meeting of our Expert Council took place on 12 June at the Institute of Architecture at TU Berlin. Daniela Setton, Head of Unit for Climate Protection and Sustainability at the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Climate Protection (MLUK), presented the Brandenburg Climate Plan. This was adopted by the Brandenburg state parliament at the beginning of March. As a cross-departmental climate strategy, it contains a comprehensive programme of measures with the aim of achieving climate neutrality in Brandenburg by 2045 at the latest. The Climate Change Center Berlin Brandenburg is named as a scientific network partner in measure 8.5 Dialogue, participation and consumer protection.

Prof. Dr Sophia Becker (TU Berlin & RIFS Potsdam), scientific coordinator of the Climate Change Center Berlin Brandenburg and Chair of the Expert Council, explains the importance of cross-state cooperation in climate policy: “The Brandenburg Climate Plan is an important milestone for climate protection in the federal state of Brandenburg. It also offers numerous starting points for a joint climate policy with Berlin. In the area of mobility, for example, climate protection can only succeed if both federal states work together even more closely than before. The CCC and its Expert Council will proactively support this cross-state cooperation and the solution-oriented exchange between science and administration.”

The second part of the meeting focussed on the heating transition with geothermal energy in the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region. Dr Johannes Birner from the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment provided information on the Berlin Senate’s “Deep Geothermal Energy Roadmap”. In addition, Prof Dr David Bruhn, Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Energy (IEG), presented the newly founded “GeoEnergy Alliance Berlin-Brandenburg” (GEB2).
