Regional Cluster: Wood and Renewable Materials in Berlin-Brandenburg

Funded institution:
Technische Universität Berlin
Cooperation partnre(s):
Bauhaus Erde gGmbH, Eberswalde University for Sustainable
Development

General information

The Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region offers ideal parameters for a climate-friendly transformation of the construction sector, as it provides a wide variety of urban spaces and connects large agricultural and forestry expanses. The major challenges in agricultural and forest conversion can be perfectly combined with the resource and construction transition. The project aimed to build a network of different stakeholders along the regional timber value chain at the interface between practice and research in the region.

Method

Surveys were conducted with companies and research institutions and experts from successful clusters in Bavaria and Austria were interviewed. Workshops were successful in creating a regional network “Wood and renewable raw materials” and identifying the regional needs of municipalities, businesses, and research.

Results

The digital platform for the transdisciplinary research and economic cluster was established. It is expected to launch in Q2 2024. The final report was published in spring 2024.

Outreach

Two cluster workshops were held in June and October 2023 respectively, both with approximately 25 participants. Four internal workshops were held as part of the partner network, which includes the HNEE and the Landesbeirat Holz Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.

With its vast forest expanses, Brandenburg is particularly well-suited for the transition in timber construction. This is why we addressed all regional stakeholders in the timber value chain – from forestry companies to master carpenters – and forged links between them through workshops and meetings.
